Faculty of Letters
Literature, philosophy, history and classical languages, read closely and argued rigorously. The old art of reading well, taught by those who love it.
A distinguished academy since 1897
For more than a century Scholar has shaped rigorous, humane minds. Small tutorials, devoted mentors and a curriculum that prizes depth over haste. Enter a scholar, leave a thinker.
The faculties
Each faculty is led by resident scholars and taught in intimate tutorials. Choose the discipline that calls you and study it in earnest.
Literature, philosophy, history and classical languages, read closely and argued rigorously. The old art of reading well, taught by those who love it.
Physics, chemistry and biology grounded in the laboratory and the first principles behind every result.
Jurisprudence, moot courts and the discipline of clear argument, for those who will hold the scales.
Markets, accountancy and economic reasoning, taught with the ethics that ought to accompany them.
Studio practice, art history and music, where craft and imagination are held to an exacting hand.
Governance, international relations and public policy, for the citizens who will steward the commons.
Why Scholar
Reputations are not declared, they are earned across generations. Ours was built one careful tutorial at a time, by teachers who believed that how a person thinks matters more than what they memorise.
Two or three students to a scholar. Ideas are tested aloud, week after week, until they hold.
Faculty live among students, not above them, and remain reachable long after the lecture ends.
A working library of a hundred thousand volumes, open to every student from the first day.
The senior common room
Our scholars are chosen for the clarity of their teaching as much as the depth of their work. You will learn from people who still love the question.
The class of 1897 onward
A tradition is only as good as the lives it launches. A few of the many who began here.
Our creed
We do not teach students to pass. We teach them to think, to read closely, to argue in good faith and to carry that discipline into every life they choose to lead.
In their words
What lasts is rarely on the certificate. It is the way of thinking a place gives you.
The tutorials taught me to defend an idea and, more usefully, to abandon a weak one. I use that discipline every single day.
As a parent I saw my daughter grow patient with hard problems. Scholar did not rush her, and that changed everything.
I arrived certain of my opinions and left curious about everyone else's. That is the whole education, really.
