Monsoon HouseWayanad · Kerala

Est. 1948 plantation bungalow · 5 rooms · all meals

The house that changes with the sky.

It has been raining since four. The verandah smells of wet laurel and cardamom, and the whole estate has gone the deep green it keeps for June. This is the season we are named for.

Clear gold mornings, long blue shadows by three in the afternoon. The air is washed and cold enough for a shawl on the verandah, and the viewpoint is visible from the lawn.

Bright, slow, mango-heavy. The ceiling fans turn all afternoon, the old walls stay cool, and the river is finally warm enough to sit in.

Right now: 22°C, rain on the roof, second pot of chai.Right now: 20°C, lamps lit early, frogs starting up in the pond. Right now: 24°C and cloudless, laundry dry within the hour.Right now: 16°C, a bonfire being laid on the lawn. Right now: 33°C in the sun, cool inside the old walls.Right now: 27°C, the first breeze since lunch.

Five rooms · rates follow the season

Rooms, priced honestly.

Monsoon is our off-season, so it is the cheapest time to be here. It is also, we would argue, the best. The rain is the main event and the rooms facing the estate hear it properly.

Winter is Wayanad's high season and our rates reflect it. Every room gets the gold light. Book six to eight weeks ahead for the year-end weeks.

Summer is the shoulder season. High ceilings and cross-breeze do the work of air conditioning, and the lofts stay coolest through the afternoon.

Deep eaves keep it shaded until evening. The coolest sit-out in the house for a slow afternoon.

All meals included · cooked to the weather

The table.

When it rains, the kitchen leans hot and sour. Rasam gets more pepper, the vada pan stays on, and chai appears roughly on the hour whether you ask or not.

Cold clear mornings mean breakfast moves onto the lawn: puttu steaming in the sun, estate honey, and oranges from the market in Kalpetta.

Summer is the mango table. Raw mango in the fish curry, ripe mango after every meal, and dinner shifts to the verandah once the day lets go of its heat.

Everything is cooked in one kitchen by Sudha and her crew, most of it grown or bought within ten kilometres.

What this season is for

Do what the weather suggests.

Monsoon days here are not for itineraries. They are for one good outing in proper rain gear and a long afternoon of doing very little, extremely well.

Winter is the doing season. Cold starts, clear summits, and evenings that earn the bonfire.

Summer runs on river time. Mornings in the water, afternoons under the fans, evenings under a very clear sky.

Direct booking only · no platforms

Book the house.

You are booking monsoon dates: the lowest rates of the year, the loudest roof, and the greenest estate. Bring one warm layer and books you have been meaning to read.

You are booking peak season. If your dates are flexible by even two days we can usually find you a better corner of the calendar.

You are booking the slow season. Rooms are easy to get, the river is warm, and if you come in May the mangoes are non-negotiable.

Monsoon note: rates shown are the off-season rates. Rain gear is ours to lend, in every size from six-year-old to six-foot-four. Winter note: peak-season rates apply. A 50% advance holds the room; the balance is settled at the house. Summer note: shoulder rates apply. Tell us if you are coming for the mangoes and we will time your visit to the pick.

We reply personally on WhatsApp, usually within a few hours. No booking engines, no card required to enquire.
